Chapter Eleven

“I wasted time, and now doth time waste me.”

William Shakespeare

Online birthing classes helped me deal with stress better than labor itself—if I ever went into labor. Each breath I took slowed my pulse and cleared my head. I paced the length of our living room while following the recommended inhale and exhale rhythm from the YouTube video on the TV.

Will the cops trace the tire iron back to Kai? They couldn’t since it didn’t belong to us. Right?

Wrong. If I hadn’t wiped well enough, they could still pull my husband’s fingerprints from the weapon…not to mention the fact that they found it under our car. What was I thinking when I’d hid it there?

It felt lazy to blame the mistake on my fuzzy pregnancy brain, but I couldn’t deny the truth. As much as I wanted to stay one step ahead of the investigation, exhaustion from growing a magical human had me falling two steps behind.

I paced faster and lost time with the birthing class’s instructions, breathing twice as fast now.

Wendy copied me, literally following in my footsteps. Where I stepped, she stepped. When I sucked in a breath, she popped a graham cracker shaped like a teddy bear into her mouth. Okay, so she didn’t mirror my actions exactly—she was her own little person, after all.

“With all that walking I wouldn’t be surprised if the baby falls out of you,” Scarlet said. She curled her feet beneath her butt and sat on the couch crisscross applesauce style.

I stopped and glared at her. “Really helpful, Scar. Thanks.”

The sudden halt made Wendy bump into my butt. Scarlet shrugged and pressed her phone to her ear.

“Honesty is the best policy,” she said. “Let’s not panic until we know for sure what evidence they have. I’m calling Esmeralda to see if she’ll tell me about the weapon.”

Officer Esmeralda had not only worked on investigations with me before, but she’d become a family friend. Unfortunately, after her divorce, we’d struggled to find time to get together. While she’d taken to dating, I was swamped with sleep.

I watched the woman in the birthing video and tried to resume the breathing techniques. When that didn’t work, I continued pacing. Theories scrambled in my mind. Next step, find Blair Danes and the man she’s working with.

I marched to the Coffee Table of Evidence and snatched Kai’s phone from the edge. Quickly, I tapped his password into the screen and swiped through the apps again. I resumed pacing while scanning for any more clues. Nothing about Blair Danes came up on his social media apps or anywhere else. Still, I wanted to be thorough, even opening apps he never used like the files folder and TV streaming services.

With each swipe, my heart sank. No new clues guided me. Except for one. The last of several TV apps piqued my curiosity. Kai always had History Channel shows queued to watch. All Ancient Egyptian and Histories Mysteries shows were now removed from the queue. Only one show—one Kai would never watch—was saved for viewing.
